As current fashion trends take over the wardrobe of most, there are such individuals, who have the knack to revisit history. To look different, yet fresh and out of the ordinary. Filling their cupboard with all things vintage, they combine fashion with history, exhibiting a blast from the past moment. Always keeping an eye out for affordable and quality vintage dresses, shopping vintage is their favorite past-time.

However, vintage fashion isn’t an easily achievable feat. There is a lot of wandering through stores, rummaging through piles, and trying on clothes. Finally, you find the vintage dress you always wanted, glowing through a mound of vintage-style prints.

Pair yourself with a friend who likes shopping vintage, and embark on the vintage dress shopping spree of your dreams. Here are a few tips, to make this spree easier and effective for you:

  • Broaden your Mind (and tastes!)

If you are a true vintage-enthusiast, you are aware of the treasures you may find when going through a thrift store. From shirts to turtlenecks to flapper dresses to body-hugging silk vintage dresses, all lines the stands waiting to be bought and adored.

Everybody has a specific taste, however, the first thing you should do whilst entering a vintage shop, is to have an open mind. To be willing to try anything and everything that suits you. Never enter thinking to buy a single sweater, because you might miss out on the best vintage-style printed dress you could ever find. Scavenge through the store, and leave with the best find of the day, and your heart fulfilled to the brim.

  • Opt for a Fusion of Vintage and Modern

Although you have gone to shop vintage, know the notion less is more. Alongside upholding vintage dress fashion, it is imperative to appear trendy too. Dressed in vintage from top to bottom may aware over-the-top, and a tad like you are an attendant to a costume party. Instead, represent the past with a modern twist. When going to shop, get the perfect sweater vintage dress of the 1960s, and pair it up with currently chunky jewelry and boots. A past-present fusion – what can be better?

  • Be Vary of Sizes

Vintage shopping is never easy to do online due to the differing sizes of the past. For instance, if you are a current size 8, you will fit into a ‘80s size 10, ‘70s size 12, and a size 14 of the ‘50s!

This means, be sure to try out whatever you pick, and do not fear the size tag – perhaps the only time we can say this (sigh!).

  • Choose What Speaks YOU

Remember vintage shopping is less different to regular shopping than people have made it out to be. Thus do not opt for a fashion trend of an era you feel is not your type. For some, the flapper dresses of the Roaring 20s may not be their cup of tea. For others, some vintage style-prints may not suit their body figure.

In such cases, it is better to choose the era, and the fashion style which speaks to you, of you. Go for bold prints if you are the bubbly, joyous kind. Go for pastel shades of the past, if subtle is what you want. Do not choose on a vintage dress or style, simply because the theme was a specific era. Remember, your clothes represent you, and should be a mirror image of you.

  • Do not be Brand-Conscious

When looking for vintage dress fashion, know that seldom do brands matter. The best vintage dresses can often be found in thrift stores, and street lining kiosks. Yes donning an Armani label is another feel in itself. However, fall in love with vintage clothing for itself, not for the label. Love the print, the fabric, the style, and the era it represents. For if you love what you wear, no matter where it’s from – you are bound to look a million bucks.

  • Vary Second-Hand Remnants

With vintage clothing comes the idea of wear and tear – for thrift stores usually have second-hand clothing. The idea of used clothing should not upset you, for this is the art of vintage, of pre-loved fashion. However, as you purchase, be vary of the extent of wear and tear. A single missing button may be easily replaced and sewn. However, stains, sweat marks, broken zips, and torn hemlines seldom find their way back to how they were earlier. A bit of snip and tuck in vintage clothing is usual, however if the required amendments are many, you may be better off with another vintage dress instead.

As you leave for your vintage shopping spree, be equipped with all these factors, and be ready to put your bargaining skills to use in case you are going to thrift stores. Enter with a smile, look for your heart’s desire, and in case you don’t find a vintage dress at that moment, ask them when they get their new stock in.

Get, set, shop!

In current times people are always looking for new styles and new fashions trends to incorporate into their wardrobes. But more than often, it is the vintage styles that get picked up from the past decades and are somehow fashioned, modified and brought back to this decade. These vintage styles are not at all ancient as one might think of and are equally unique and glamorous with various different changes occurring by the passage of time. These changes mostly occurred as one decade passed away and soon as people stepped foot in a new decade, new fashion trends emerged.

A great example of the ever changing trend can be taken from the twenties when flappers and mid knee dresses were the talk of the town.  Accompanied with kitten heels, these dresses were worn by every lady during the 20s. But as soon as the 30s came, the old flappers were chucked out of the window and in came the long, slim, full sleeved dresses. These dresses were almost as long as till the toes and would touch the ground if worn with flats.

There has been various types of dresses include cocktail dresses, flappers, dresses with short sleeves, long sleeves and even strapless ones s time passed.

One thing that really makes a dress stand out from the crowd is the color if it. The design and the sequins on the dress come later on as further inspection is done on the intricate details but the first thing that catches the viewers eye is the color of the dress. The one color that is ever green and can never get out of fashion is white. Worn by brides initially, and associated with angels and naivety, this is one color that speaks volumes of the elegance and sophistication of the person wearing it.

There are various kinds of vintage party dresses some of which are mentioned below:

1. Lace dresses

The lace and net vintage dresses are the most elegant ones. With nothing much done on the fabric, these dresses are just adorned with a lot of lace or are sometimes entirely made up of net with lining underneath. Accessorized with a belt near the waist, or bow attached in one corner, these were the most low maintenance and simple dresses that can still be worn today.
These dresses would also sometimes be just made up of plain white fabric and would have a little lace incorporated in either the neckline or the sleeves.

2. Floral dresses

Another type of dresses famously worn in the olden times, especially in the 50s are the floral dresses. 50s were famous for bring floral prints under the spotlight so it would be unwise to address vintage dresses and not mention these floral prints. With white as the base of the dress, there would usually be large floral print design all over the dress. These flowers were mostly of vibrant colors which bring an element of joy and playfulness in the dresses. These dresses used to be perfect for barbeque lunches and day time events.

3. Flair dresses

Going back to the 50s and the 60s, dresses with flair were a huge attraction. Since corsets were pretty common back then, women would wear large dresses that would hug the curves near the waist and then flair out from right below the waist giving a look fit for a princess. These dresses would usually come in various colors but the white ones specially stood one because of the simplicity.

4. Polka dot dresses

Another vintage fashion trend that is often brought back by people today for costume and theme parties are the polka dot dresses. These dresses would specially have white color as their main feature because more than often the base of these polka dot trends was white as well. The dots used to be of either black or red color.

5. Silk dresses

White is often associated with beauty and elegance. In order to bring more of that beauty out, during the 40s and 50s, silk was used as a fabric for long dresses. This was not just limited for cocktail dresses but often wedding dresses would also be made out of silk to give them an aura of glamour while keeping it sophisticated.. Women would wear white silk elbow long gloves and red lipstick to add more color and vibrancy to the entire look.

6. Pencil dresses

Lastly, one major style that was initiated back in the 50s and is still worn by people all over the world I that of the pencil dresses. These dresses are the epitome of elegance. These pencil dresses would be fitted and would look great on hourglass figures. These dresses are still worn by women in professional and business setting since they give a formal look.

Vintage clothes are currently being accentuated in our modern-day clothing styles today to add a touch of retro look in our clothes. These vintage dresses once modified a little, give the right fusion between nostalgic and modern vibes. There are many styles that are associated with the early 50s, 60s, and 70s, and all of these and many decades compromise of years and years of glamorous and creative innovations in the fashion industry. Most people when inquired about the vintage styles for women generally just come up with puffy and flair skirts when in reality there was a lot going on in those decades beyond the skirts.

One such clothing piece that has dominated the vintage clothing line is pencil skirts and pencil dresses. The pencil dresses were originated from the year 1908 when Edith Hat o Berg wore it in an airplane as to not let the material of the cloth fly once they’re in air. The idea of pencil skirts was officially first brought forward by Christian Dior in the year 1954. Post World War II, there was a lot of rationing that had to be done in all fields of life and clothing wasn’t spared. Instead of making huge puffy skirts that required a lot of cloth, pencil skirts were introduced that hugged all the curves on a woman’s body and were as long as till the knees or calves.

These skirts were also famously known as the wiggle skirts because whilst wearing them there was little room for women to move hence they had to wiggle their way when walking. Similar was the case with pencil dresses as well.

There are some aspects that should be kept in mind if one is looking to make pencil dresses a part of their wardrobe.

· Fitting
The first thing to keep in mind whilst looking for pencil dresses and pencil skirts is the size. It is very important to find the perfect fit for your body when it comes to pencil dresses. The reason for this is because with other types of clothes, alteration is very easy and a pin here and there could give a refined look but that is not the case with pencil dresses. Since each and every curve of the body is outlined, it is wise to get a good fit or else there might be bulging clothing material which can spoil the entire look.

· Occasions
Next up, the trick to fashion is to always have a good understanding of when to wear what. The dilemma or over or under dressing can hugely dampen any event so it is necessary to keep in the mind the correct occasions when one can grace a pencil dress. These dresses have a very professional and feminine look so they can be easily worn to offices and for other business related or official events.

· The right accessories
Like every other piece of clothing, it is crucial to accessorize right in order to give it the right aura. Pencil dresses have always been worn with high heels in order to bring out the curves of the body even more. It is time to forget the comfort of your flats and get those kitten heels out of the closet for the pencil dresses. It is widely known that flats shouldn’t be worn with pencil dresses and they could completely ruin the final look.  One can even wear wedges or any other type of heels so that the legs can be brought more to the attention and one can achieve a slimmer figure.

· Color
Color is also a very important aspect when it comes to pencil dresses. Color maybe a very versatile option for any other piece of clothing but when it comes to pencil dresses one should aim for subtle and darker colors. Since these are a complete outfit and you can’t add pants or any other such clothing item to it, it is necessary to get one that can give off a complete look. Colors like burgundy, magenta, black, gray and even dark greens can be worn to give off a sophisticated and elegant look.

Pencil dresses are a very elegant clothing item that has been a centre of attraction since the last 50 decades and is still adored by people. With the correct accessories, this dress can be a modest and elegant addition to your closet.

Oscars in the 1940s were all about taking glamour to the next level with a style that speaks out. Everything brings a sense of richness and luxury and that is why it is still remembered today. We will give you some highlights that will give you an idea about how 1940s ladies fashion looked like so you can get some inspiration that you can follow or just want to know out of curiosity.
Even though World War II happened in this era, the fashion industry was still able to bring some looks that still turn necks on a themed event today.

Hour Glass figure

It is not wrong to say that it was this era when the hourglass silhouette made an entrance that is still popular today. One accessory made it a deal, and that was a belt, worn just right on the waistline that beautifully accentuated the chests and the hips, giving a feminine look while thinning the waist.

Oscar Looks in the 1940s

Looks in the early 40s were all about describing luxury as much one could. So this look was mostly good going for people who belonged to the elite class. However, people from the middle class tried to pull off that look by dressing simple clothing having accentuated belts.

Fur coats, white colors, silk fabric, and floral patterns were the talk of the town since the Oscar ward of 1940. Every little detail ought to bring luxury and richness depicting the whole outfit, and that was the whole point of the Oscars fashion of the 1940s before the war came.

When World War II came into existence, the guidelines were deliberately made to soften down the glamour depicted in the former years of Oscar. All-stars turned to clothes that were understated having a sober color palette. In many cases, the actors chose to wear clothes that were made domestically in the US Rogers. A grey silk dress would definitely pull off this look quite well.

Theme

The overall theme of the 1940s ladies fashion was again practicality, convenience, and transformation just as similar to the World War I style era. Although the war lasted until the only mid of the 1940s, it made a huge impact on all industries, and the fashion industry was also one of the majorly impacted industries in this regard.

The glamour look was put on hold during the wars and replaced by black and brown dresses with a gothic theme to what we refer to now. The sleeves and pants were full-length with a slim fitting, and the dresses were most looking like a uniform, with coats and drapes for added elegance and sophistication. It was indeed something you would want for a highly sophisticated party or Halloween. Many people confuse this look with a gothic or vampire look, however, the real essence is to bring sophistication and graveness in respect for World War II.

Other looks

Outside the red carpet, there are other looks too that stand out from the 40s. For example:

Waist cinching jackets
The 1940s ladies fashion was highlighted with skirts and waist-cinching jackets as the new look of the era. Not everyone could pull off that look in many years to come. Neckerchiefs and belted waists were the talks of the town.

The sailor-style

The sailor-style with an A-line dress having white stripes at the neck with a monochrome tone in red and blue was the real staple dress during the wartime.
Although everything was about bringing functionality and style both on one road, the key was to prefer local industries for a better economy.

Conclusion

Getting to know about the 1940s style can be quite tricky, so you cannot label it under one umbrella. It comes with drastic shifts from being a lot glamorous to being dark and mysterious. However, you can go well with both ways if you stick to a style while considering all the patterns and the points associated with that style. It is always good to try all looks if possible to know which style looks the best on you and which style makes you feel the most comfortable and happy in.
